Citroën Berlingo van finance is a commercial funding agreement used to acquire Britain's best-selling small van. Businesses can spread the cost through hire purchase or finance lease, preserving cash flow. Because it is highly popular and easily resold, lenders view it as a safe asset, which translates to competitive rates even for new businesses.

The Citroën Berlingo is the best-selling small van in Britain, and it holds that position for good reason. It carries more than a van this size has any right to, it drives like a car, and it costs sensible money to buy and run. Decorators, plumbers, electricians, couriers, and mobile businesses of every kind have made it their default choice for years. You will see one parked on almost any street in the country.

We arrange Citroën Berlingo van finance for limited companies and sole traders across the UK, new and used, diesel and electric. Here is what you need to know.

    The Citroën Berlingo range

The Berlingo comes in two lengths. The M is 4.4 metres long and offers up to 3.3 cubic metres of load space, while the XL stretches to 4.75 metres and up to 3.9 cubic metres. Both can be extended further with Citroën's clever Extenso folding passenger seat, which opens a load-through hatch in the bulkhead and takes maximum capacity to 3.8 cubic metres in the M and 4.4 cubic metres in the XL, with load lengths of over three metres. For a small van, that is a remarkable amount of carrying ability.

Payload is a genuine strength too, at up to around a tonne on diesel models, which is class-leading for this size of van. The Berlingo is also one of the few small vans available with three seats up front, and there is a Crew Van version for businesses that carry a small team as well as their kit.

Diesel power comes from the familiar 1.5-litre BlueHDi engine in 100 and 130 outputs, with a manual or automatic gearbox. The fully electric ë-Berlingo is covered below. Whichever version suits your business, we can arrange the finance.

    The Citroën ë-Berlingo electric

The electric ë-Berlingo pairs a 52kWh battery with a 136PS motor and offers an official range of up to 213 miles, which puts it among the best in the small electric van class. It supports 100kW rapid charging, taking the battery from 15 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes, and the load space is identical to the diesel because the battery sits under the floor. Payload is a little lower than the diesel, at around 750 to 800kg depending on the version.

For businesses, the electric version has a few things worth knowing. It qualifies for the government's plug-in van grant for small vans, which comes off the purchase price. It is exempt from the London ULEZ and other clean air zone charges. And as an electric commercial vehicle, it carries tax advantages that for a limited company can be significant. We cover these in more detail on our electric van finance page. As always, your accountant will confirm what applies to your business.

    Citroën Berlingo van finance deals

The rate you are offered on a Berlingo depends on the same things it always does: your business credit profile, the director's personal credit history, how long the business has been trading, and the vehicle itself.

The good news is that the Berlingo is about as lender-friendly as vans get. It is Britain's most popular small van, it is easy to value, easy to resell, and lenders see hundreds of them. A clean limited company application on a Berlingo at a sensible price will attract competitive rates from across our panel, and because we compare over 100 lenders rather than being tied to one, the deal we find is frequently sharper than dealer finance on the same van.

A word on dealer offers. Manufacturer finance and promotional deals are worth looking at, but they are tied to a single lender. The strongest position is to get pre-approved with us first, then compare. You lose nothing and you negotiate from strength.

Berlingo finance lease and hire purchase

    Hire purchase

The most common product for Berlingo finance. You pay a deposit, spread the balance over an agreed term of typically 24 to 60 months, and own the van outright at the end. Predictable monthly payments, a clean capital allowance position, and no end-of-term complications. For most businesses, it is the simplest route.

    Finance lease

A Berlingo finance lease works differently. You pay monthly rentals over the term, with the VAT added to each payment rather than paid upfront, and the van is sold to a third party at the end with your business retaining most of the sale proceeds. A balloon payment can be built in to reduce the monthly cost. Finance lease suits businesses that want lower initial outlay and predictable rentals, and it is readily available on the Berlingo.

For a full explanation of both products, visit our hire purchase vs finance lease page.

    Used Citroën Berlingo finance

The used Berlingo market is one of the largest of any van in the country, which makes it a sensible place to find value.

Because the Berlingo sells in such numbers, there is always a healthy supply of well-maintained used examples, and lenders are entirely comfortable with them. A van that is one to three years old has taken the sharpest part of its depreciation but still has plenty of working life left, which often represents the best value. Older examples finance well too. Many of the lenders we work with will finance a Berlingo that is already eight or ten years old for a further two to three years, provided the mileage is sensible and the service history is complete.

Visit our used van finance page for more detail on how age and mileage affect lender decisions.

Finance for new and start-up businesses

New limited companies, recently incorporated businesses, and start-ups under two years old are all welcome to apply.

The Berlingo is one of the most common first vans for a new business, and we place finance for new businesses regularly. Its modest price and strong resale make it an easy asset for lenders to say yes to. Without a lengthy trading history, lenders assess the application on the director's personal credit history, and a deposit is usually required. A clean personal profile on a sensibly priced Berlingo is often enough to secure an approval even for a business that has only just started trading.

Visit our new business van finance page for more detail on what lenders look for with start-up and early-stage businesses.

Citroën Berlingo finance with bad credit

A difficult credit history does not prevent you from financing a Berlingo.

As a mainstream, easily resold van at an accessible price point, the Berlingo is one of the more straightforward assets to place when credit is a concern. Specialist lenders who look at the full picture rather than an automated score are more likely to consider an adverse credit application on a familiar van like this, and the modest finance amounts involved help too. A larger deposit and strong recent trading both improve the options.

Visit our bad credit van finance page for more information on how we handle adverse credit applications.

    Other Citroën vans we finance

The Berlingo is the small van in Citroën's range, but we arrange finance across the full line-up. The mid-size Citroën Dispatch and the large Citroën Relay are both popular with UK businesses, and the Relay is also a common base for minibus and campervan conversions. If you are looking at any Citroën commercial vehicle, or comparing the Berlingo against its close relatives the Peugeot Partner, Vauxhall Combo, Fiat Doblo, and Toyota Proace City, we can arrange finance on any of them.

Get pre-approved before you go shopping

A growing number of businesses come to us for pre-approval before they start looking at vans. It means you know exactly what you can borrow and at what rate, so you can negotiate the best price with any reputable dealer and move quickly when you find the right vehicle. Good used Berlingos sell fast, and being ready to proceed puts you in a much stronger position than a buyer still sorting out their finance.

    Who can apply

Limited companies can typically borrow from £10,000. Most new Berlingos and quality used examples sit comfortably within mainstream lending parameters.

Sole trader finance is available from £25,000 on unregulated credit agreements. Given the Berlingo's accessible pricing, sole traders may find this threshold relevant, so it is worth a conversation about the right structure before you apply.

If you are not sure whether your business or the Berlingo you are looking at qualifies, the quickest thing to do is ask. We will give you a straight answer before anything is submitted.
