What is tipper van finance? Tipper van finance is a specialist commercial vehicle funding product for vans equipped with a tipping body, commonly used in construction, groundworks, and waste management. Because tippers are heavy-use working vehicles, lenders assess the age, mileage, and conversion quality carefully, often requiring specialist funders who understand the asset class. Not sure about the difference between these terms? Check our Van Finance Glossary.
Tipper vans work hard for a living. They spend their days on building sites, in quarries, shifting spoil, hauling hardcore, and tipping waste. Because of the heavy use they get, lenders treat them a bit differently compared to a standard panel van.
Not every bank or funder wants to finance a tipper. Some mainstream lenders worry about the wear and tear and simply decline the application. We know exactly which specialist lenders are happy to fund tippers, meaning we won't waste your time applying to the wrong places.
What we arrange finance for
- Single and twin-wheel tipper vans on a car-derived or light commercial base
- Alloy body tippers and steel body tippers
- New and used tippers from all major manufacturers
- Tippers with tail lifts or crane attachments
- Specialist construction and groundworks tippers
- High-mileage working tippers where condition and provenance can be demonstrated
Makes we regularly finance
Ford, Volkswagen, Vauxhall, Renault, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan. Most tipper conversions carried out by reputable converters are also considered. The key thing lenders want to know is who did the conversion and whether it was done properly. A poor quality job on the body will cause problems at the application stage.
New or used: does it matter?
You can finance both. Used tippers are incredibly common in the construction sector, and most lenders are happy to fund them depending on their age and condition. Typically, lenders prefer the vehicle to be no older than eight to ten years by the time the finance agreement ends. High mileage is usually less of a problem for a tipper than a panel van, as lenders understand the nature of the work, but they still want to see a solid service history.
Buying a brand new tipper is usually very straightforward if you have an established limited company and a clean credit record. If your business is newer or you have had credit bumps in the past, you might just need to put down a deposit. We work with specialist lenders who can help, so check out our bad credit van finance page if you're concerned about your history.
Tipper finance for new businesses and startups
Getting a tipper van for a brand new limited company or startup can feel like an uphill battle because mainstream lenders often want to see years of trading history. But we know that groundworks, landscaping, and construction businesses need working vehicles from day one. If you are just starting out, we can still help you secure funding.
We look at your experience in the trade and the director's personal credit rather than demanding endless company accounts. You might need to put down a slightly larger deposit, but it is absolutely possible to get your new business moving. Take a look at our dedicated new business van finance page to see exactly how we arrange approvals for startups.
Finance products available
Hire purchase is the most popular route for tipper van finance. You make fixed monthly payments and then own the truck completely at the end of the agreement. If you prefer lower monthly payments and do not necessarily want to own the vehicle long-term, a finance lease might be an option with certain lenders. We always discuss your business needs (see hire purchase vs finance lease) before suggesting a specific finance product.
Who can apply
UK limited companies can usually borrow anywhere from £10,000 upwards. If you operate as a sole trader, we can arrange unregulated credit agreements starting at £25,000. Our clients include construction firms, groundworks contractors, waste carriers, landscapers, and agricultural businesses.
