Business van finance with bad credit

What is bad credit van finance? Bad credit van finance refers to commercial vehicle funding arranged for businesses or directors with an adverse credit history, such as CCJs, defaults, or missed payments. Specialist lenders assess the overall business performance and affordability rather than relying solely on automated credit scores. For more definitions, check our Van Finance Glossary.

    We work with specialist lenders

If you've ever applied for finance through a high street bank, you know the drill. They rely heavily on automated credit scoring. If your business or personal credit file has a few bumps and bruises, the computer simply says no. You get instantly declined before a human being has even glanced at your application.

We do things differently. We partner with specialist lenders who actually look at the full picture. They care about your current trading strength, your realistic ability to repay, and the actual van you're looking to buy. Because let's face it: a CCJ from three years ago shouldn't be a life sentence that stops your business from growing. (If you are a start-up, see our guide to new business van finance).

    What counts as bad credit?

In a business finance context, adverse credit can include:

    • County Court Judgements (CCJs) - on the business or the director personally
    • Defaults on previous credit agreements
    • Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs)
    • Previous business insolvency or administration
    • Missed or late payments on existing credit
    • Low or thin credit file (limited credit history)

What can you do to strengthen your application?

There are steps you can take to improve your chances of approval:

    • Be upfront about your credit history - lenders respond much better to transparency
    • Provide up-to-date management accounts or bank statements to demonstrate current trading
    • Offer a larger deposit if possible - this reduces the lender's exposure (though no deposit van finance is sometimes still possible depending on the exact credit profile)
    • Consider a shorter finance term to reduce overall risk in the lender's eyes (use our van finance calculator to see how term length affects payments)
    • Ensure your personal credit file is as clean as possible if you are a director of the business (Looking at second-hand vehicles? See our used van finance options)

Why use a specialist broker instead of a van dealer?

Step onto a dealership forecourt, and the salesperson has one goal: selling you the van. The finance package they push is usually just a convenient tool to close the deal. Most dealers only use one or two mainstream lenders, and those lenders are heavily focused on personal car finance, not the realities of commercial funding. As a result, they often hit a brick wall when trying to help new businesses, companies without three years of filed accounts, or anyone with a less-than-perfect credit score.

On top of that, dealer finance packages rarely offer vital commercial flexibility. Take VAT deferral, for example. It is a lifesaver that lets you delay paying the upfront VAT on a hire purchase deal until your next VAT quarter. Because a dealer's lender pool is so tiny, you will often find their rates are noticeably higher than what a specialist commercial broker can dig up from the wider market (read how van finance rates work).

We don't have that problem. We work with over 100 UK lenders. That means we match your specific business profile to the exact right funder, instead of trying to squeeze you into whatever narrow criteria the dealer's system demands.

How much can I borrow with bad credit?

This depends entirely on the lender and your specific circumstances. We work with lenders who will consider finance from £10,000 for limited companies and from £25,000 for sole traders on unregulated agreements. A larger deposit might be required for adverse credit applications.

    Frequently asked questions

Yes, securing bad credit van finance is entirely possible. We work with specialist commercial lenders who understand that a poor credit history, previous defaults, or CCJs shouldn't prevent your UK business from getting the commercial vehicles it needs.

Typically, specialist van finance lenders require a slightly larger deposit for businesses with adverse credit - often around 20% to 30%. This helps offset the risk and increases your chances of approval for commercial vehicle finance.

Not necessarily. While mainstream lenders might decline applications with CCJs, our specialist bad credit van finance panel looks at the wider picture. Satisfied CCJs are viewed more favourably, but even with unsatisfied CCJs, we have funders who can help depending on your overall business profile.

Yes, sole traders can apply for poor credit van finance on unregulated credit agreements for commercial vehicles over £25,000. Your personal credit profile will be assessed, but we have specialist options available.

Yes, interest rates for bad credit van finance are generally higher than standard rates to reflect the increased risk to the lender. However, we compare options across multiple specialist lenders to find the most competitive commercial van finance deal for your specific circumstances.

We use soft credit searches initially whenever possible to assess your eligibility for adverse credit van finance. This protects your credit score from multiple hard footprints while we find the right specialist lender for your business.

We use a 'soft search' initially to assess your profile, which does not impact your credit score. A hard footprint is only left once you decide to proceed with a specific lender's formal application.

It is very unlikely. Lenders taking on higher risk usually require a deposit (often between 10% and 20%) to provide security against the loan. Putting down a deposit significantly improves your chances of approval.
